From the moment they come into the world, dogs are predisposed to chew. As they grow from puppies into adults, they delight in putting everything into their mouths – shoes, bags, or even coffee table legs!

While as an owner, the habit of chewing may bother you, there are reasons why dogs exhibit this behaviour. Noted veterinarian and advocate Dr. Karen Becker explains the reasons:

Dogs explore their world with their mouths. They pick up objects to see how they feel and taste.
Chewing alleviates boredom and stress, helps clean teeth and exercises their jaw muscles.
Dogs learn how to spend time alone and be less stressed or anxious.

“This will come as absolutely no surprise to all of you out there with a canine family member: dogs are professional chewers!,” Dr. Becker says. “In fact, chewing is one of their favourite pastimes. Even dogs with few or no teeth will give it a go.”

So now we understand why chewing is important, what to allow your puppy or dog to chew is critical. Because canines are hard-wired to chew, the smartest step to take is to supply plenty of items to chew that are safe and good for him or her. Doing so prevents damage to your shoes, offering appropriate items to chew instead.

But here’s where it gets tricky. Take a visit to any pet food store, and you’ll be inundated by the sheer volume of various items for chewing on the market. It can be overwhelming and confusing to know what’s best for your pet. Before you make your way to the checkout, what kind of a chewer is your pet? The determination of this is key.

Scarfers — If your dog tends to scarf down everything, size matters. Anything offered could be swallowed whole, causing a choking hazard or remain whole in their stomach. The solution is to offer a bone that’s larger than your pet’s jaw.

Aggressive chewers – These are dogs whose goal is to consume the bone in its entirety. This zealous approach can often result in fractured teeth. Offer large, raw knuckle bones which are softer and gentler on teeth. Commercially made 100% edible bones are another option. As with all bones offered to dogs, monitor your pet closely. Once a bone becomes too small it poses a choking hazard, so remove it immediately.

Soft chewers – As dogs age, has sensitive teeth or extensive dental work, that often means your pet is a soft chewer. So, it’s a good idea to go with even softer material, such as commercially available 100% edible “bones” made with human-grade ingredients that are much more pliable than actual skeletal bones from mammals.

Now you know what kind of a chewer your dog is, it’s time to look at what’s best for your pet. We’ll explore the various choices available today and the pros and cons for each – with the help of Dr. Becker and Rodney Habib of Planet Paws. We’ll start with the healthiest choices and work down to the worst:

Raw Recreational Bones – If you’re home with your dog and able to closely supervise your pet, raw recreational bones are the safest and best choice for chewing. From an evolutionary perspective, raw bones have been part of your animal’s ancestral eating habits for centuries. Bone marrow is part of your pet’s nutritional requirements. They love to chew them for the taste, mental stimulation, and to exercise for the jaw muscles.

Fully edible chews — Some of the newer chews on the market don’t contain any animal parts at all. The healthiest options are made with milk, cheese, human-grade tapioca or potatoes (or compressed vegetables). These are an excellent choice for pets who’ve had dental work, have tender mouths, or are scarfers, designed to be consumed in their entirety. Himalayan chews, made from sundried yak milk is one of the more unique chews available and a good option for dogs who can’t eat certain types of protein. There are also several other edible bones that are vegetable-based and appropriate for animals with sensitive stomachs.

Synthetic chews — Synthetic chews are made of nylon or flavoured plastic and they’re easy to find in most big box stores. Feeding synthetic materials to your dog isn’t the healthiest option. With so many natural chews and bones available, there’s really no reason to go with a synthetic product.

Tendon chews — Long and slender in design, many dogs love these chews but like rawhides, tendon chews can become very soft and pliable as your dog gnaws on them. They pose a significant choking risk for some dogs.

Pizzles can also present a risk for choking, even if your dog is a gentle chewer. It’s recommended that you purchase long pizzles and when your pet has taken care of the majority of it, you can discard it.

Pig ears – These are a popular choice, but be aware of the downside. As with any mass-produced food animal, pigs ears are a common location for hormone implants and can be detrimental to your pet’s health in the long run. Organic pigs ears are a good alternative.

Rawhide chews — These are the oldest chews available. A more accurate name would be processed-hide because the skin isn’t raw at all. Not only are they high in calories, but they’re often found on lists of pet poisons and have other problems as well. These are not recommended for your beloved pet.

It is so important to start taking care of your dog’s teeth from an early age. Many pet insurance plans note that certain services are only covered if your pet is covered from 6 months of age. Dental issues must be detected early so that they don’t cause more serious health issues later in life. Pearly Whites for Pets offers a Puppy Visit for this very reason. While we are not veterinarians (we cannot diagnose nor treat dental issues), we can collaborate with your veterinarian and help to recognize issues in your pet’s mouth early on, to help set your cat or dog up for success. There are several issues, such as misalignment or unerupted teeth, retained baby teeth to name a few, which can be corrected by veterinary dentistry. But they must be detected early. Insurance can help keep your mind at ease, as far as the financial burden that can transpire, but it must be truly comprehensive dental coverage. It is important to note that the vast majority of insurance companies do not offer comprehensive dental coverage. They do not even include cleanings nor extractions. Should I Worry About My Dog’s Bad Breath?

Does your dog get in your face for some loving and you think to yourself “I really need to start brushing my dog’s teeth”? Do you dismiss it as just a dog thing and then forget about it … until the next time?

If your dog has chronic bad breath, known as halitosis, it requires your attention. While dog’s mouths do not typically smell like breath mints, they should not smell like something died in there either!

What Causes Bad Dog Breath?

Just like in humans, bad breath is most commonly caused by poor oral hygiene. The accumulation of plaque and tartar on teeth can lead to bacteria in the mouth that lives in the biofilms that cover all oral surfaces and causes bad breath. If you are not regularly brushing your dog’s teeth and tongue, or if you are not using other methods of home care to support their oral hygiene, plaque build-up is likely the culprit for their bad breath.

Many dog owners make the mistake of dismissing their dog’s bad breath as a normal thing for a dog. But too much plaque and tartar can start to push the gums away from the teeth, exposing areas for bacteria. Gum disease, which is progressive and starts as gingivitis, advances as plaque build-up, and results in periodontal disease, is the leading health issue affecting adult dogs. Gingivitis, evident from a thin red line on the gum line where it meets the teeth, causes inflammation which leads to gum tissue damage and will progress further if left untreated. In worst case scenarios, breakdown of the jawbone can eventually occur, resulting in lost teeth. Dental disease causes severe halitosis and affects other organs in the body. Studies have shown that periodontal disease has been linked to heart, liver and kidney disease in dogs. Chronic bad breath is definitely not something to ignore.

What is Halitosis?

Halitosis is, simply put, seriously bad doggie breath! But it is important to understand that halitosis is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Halitosis can only be cured by finding and addressing the underlying cause.

While halitosis can be caused by poor oral hygiene, there are other common issues that can contribute to bad dog breath. Dogs who like to chew sticks, toys and/or ropes are at a higher risk of getting part of what they chew stuck between their teeth or lodged in their gums. If this foreign body goes undetected, it has the potential to cause an infection in the mouth, a symptom of which is bad breath.

Many dogs are infamous for getting into the trash, eating things they shouldn’t. We regularly throw away food waste, including things like chicken skin or rib bones which are appealing to dogs. If these things have been in the trash for a few days, they are already decomposing and essentially your dog is eating rotten food. This most certainly leads to bad breath, not to mention a bad stomach ache.

Some dogs like to eat poop – disgusting but true! While some dogs eat their own poop, others prefer the poop of other animals – anything from rabbit poop to goose poop to cat poop, the latter of which is most common as many households have both cats and dogs. Called Coprophagia, eating poop is caused by behavioural, physical or medical reasons and needs to be addressed accordingly. Coprophagia most definitely causes halitosis and will result in the denial of doggie kisses from owners everywhere!

While bad breath is not breed specific, smaller dog breeds and Brachycephalic dogs are more prone to halitosis because they are more likely to have gum disease. This is due to anatomical factors that contribute to crowded and crooked teeth (and would require another Blog post for proper explanation; we are working on it -coming soon).

More Serious Causes of Bad Dog Breath

While poor oral hygiene is the most common cause, halitosis can sometimes be caused by more serious health issues. Periodontal disease is a leading health concern in dogs, but the following health issues are also culprits and need to be diagnosed promptly by a veterinarian.

Kidney Disease: Toxins called urea build up in the bloodstream of a dog affected by kidney disease. The urea can cause a dog’s breath to smell like urine or ammonia. Too much urea can cause ulceration in the mouth and must be treated. Kidney disease is a serious medical condition.
Diabetes: If your dog’s breath smells sweet or fruity, and if you notice they are drinking and urinating more frequently, this can be an indication of diabetes. This is a treatable health condition.
Liver Disease: Severe halitosis, combined with yellow-ish gums, can be a sign of another serious medical problem with the liver. Typically, your dog will exhibit other issues like a lack of appetite and vomiting if they have liver disease.

What Can I Do About my Dog’s Bad Breath?

The most obvious answer is to maintain and support your dog’s oral health. The best way to do this is through a combination of regular veterinary care, home care that includes an oral hygiene routine and supplemental things such as dental toys and treats, water additives and supplements that promote the health of both the oral and gut microbiome. If your dog is a candidate for toothbrushing at home, make sure you use a toothpaste formulated for dogs. They come in many flavours, one of which your dog will love, making the experience more enjoyable for you both. Make sure you keep your trash out of reach from your dog. If you have a cat, ensure your dog does not have access to their litter box. Keep a close eye on your dog while you are out walking as people often discard things on lawns and sidewalks that dogs can easily reach. This includes animal feces too. How many times do we curse owners for not picking up their dog’s poop? You do not want your dog taking care of that with their mouth!

Be sure to feed your dog a quality, balanced diet. If your veterinarian is concerned about their oral health, there are many dental-focused diets for dogs. Do your research and find the formula best suited for your dog. Feeding your dog dental treats that are made to support oral hygiene will also help to keep your dog’s mouth clean and their breath fresh.

Ultimately, you know your dog best. It is important to give your dog a regular check-up with a veterinarian for a proactive approach to maintain their overall health. Regular check-ups must include your dog’s mouth as well, in order to prioritize preventative dental care. The Connection Between Gut and Oral Health

We all know that what we put in our mouths has a direct connection to what then happens in our gut. But did you know that the reverse is also true, that what is happening in our gut is directly related to what is in our mouths? The oral microbiome has a direct impact on the health of the gastrointestinal system and the same is true for our beloved feline and canine companions.

Many pet owners have been told that part of the key to their cat or dog’s longevity lies with maintaining good oral hygiene. Scientists have been studying oral bacteria for nearly 400 years, trying to understand what species live in different areas of the body and how they impact overall health. With increasing rates of global diseases, bacteriology, the branch of microbiology that studies bacteria, is more important to understand than ever before, including in veterinary medicine.

What is a Microbiome?

Microbiome is a collective term for all the trillions of bacterial, fungal and viral microbes that naturally live inside your pet’s body, on their fur and skin, and inside their mouth.

Microbes may be microscopic in size but the effects they have upon overall health are big.

While many people tend to assume microbes are a bad thing, they each play a specific role in keeping your pet healthy. Bacteria, for example, aid in digestion, help to maintain the immune system and good bacteria are needed to fight off bad bacteria.

Until about ten years ago, the only way pet owners could clean their cats’ and dogs’ teeth was by putting them under anesthesia at their veterinarian’s office.
