Your Pet's First Time Teeth Cleaning: What to Expect

If you're new to pet teeth cleaning, it's completely normal to have questions. Maybe you're wondering whether your dog or cat will sit still, what the visit actually involves, or how this is different from what a vet does. This page is here to answer those questions honestly, so you and your pet can feel comfortable before you ever walk through the door. We work with first-time clients across Toronto and Ontario every week, and we're happy to take the time to explain everything before you book.
First Time Pet Teeth Cleaning in Toronto, ON
What Happens at a New Patient Session
Every first-time client starts with a New Patient Session. This is the standard entry point for all new pets, whether you have a young adult dog, a senior cat, or anything in between. During the session, we use all-natural products to clean your pet's teeth and finish with a professional polisher. The environment is open and visible, so you can see exactly what's happening at all times. We take our time and work with the pet in front of us.

Preparing for Pet Teeth Cleaning
How to Get Ready for Your First Visit
You don't need to do much to prepare for your pet's first cleaning. The most important thing is coming in with realistic expectations and an open mind. Every pet responds differently, and that's something we're very used to. We use same-practitioner booking specifically to help pets build familiarity and trust over time, and we'll talk through any concerns you have before we begin. If your dog is 12 years or older, we offer a free consultation to assess whether the session is a good fit before you commit to booking.
NEW TO PET oral CARE
This Is Not a Veterinary Procedure
One of the most common questions we hear from first-time clients is how this compares to veterinary work. The answer is straightforward: what we do is simple, all-natural teeth cleaning. It is not a replacement for veterinary care. We focus on oral care support as a routine maintenance habit. If we ever see something that looks like it needs a vet's attention, we will tell you honestly and refer you to the right professional. That's how we've always worked.
The First-Time Pet Cleaning Experience
What Makes the Visit Feel Different
A lot of pet owners tell us they were surprised by how calm the visit felt. We work in an open studio environment, which means you can watch the whole session. There are no hidden back rooms and no mystery about what's happening with your pet. Our practitioners are experienced and patient, and they know how to read an animal's comfort level as the session progresses. We keep detailed notes on every visit, so if your pet comes back, we already know their history and what worked well last time. Our goal is simple: make the visit a positive experience for your pet and a comfortable one for you.
Common Questions
What First-Time Clients Ask Us Most
  • What exactly happens during a first time pet teeth cleaning visit?

During a New Patient Visit, a practitioner cleans your pet's teeth using all-natural products and finishes with a professional polisher. The visit takes place in an open studio environment, so you can watch the entire process. We take our time with each pet and adjust our approach based on how comfortable your pet seems. We also keep detailed notes so that future visits can build on what we learned during this first one.

  • How is this different from the services my vet offers?

What we offer is all-natural teeth cleaning as a routine oral care support habit. It is not a medical treatment and is not intended to replace veterinary dental care. If we notice anything during a visit that looks like it may need a vet's attention, we will always let you know and refer you to the right professional.

  • My dog is older. Is it too late to start teeth cleaning for the first time?

Age alone doesn't automatically rule out a first-time cleaning, but we do want to make sure the visit is appropriate for your pet. For dogs that are 12 years or older, we offer a free consultation to talk through your pet's situation before booking. This helps us understand what to expect and lets you ask any questions you have. We will always be honest with you about whether a visit makes sense for your pet at this stage.

  • What if my pet won't sit still during the visit?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear from first-time clients, and it's a fair one. Every pet is different, and some take more time to settle than others. Our practitioners are experienced in working with pets of all temperaments. We adjust our pace based on the animal in front of us and use same-practitioner booking so your pet can build familiarity with one person over time. We never rush, and we will talk with you if something doesn't feel right during the visit.

  • Do you offer a specific visit for puppies having their first cleaning?

Yes. We have a dedicated Puppy Visit for dogs up to 16 months old. The visit includes a teeth cleaning along with friendly guidance for the owner on supporting oral care at home. The focus is on making the experience calm and positive for a young dog, helping them build a comfortable association with the process early on. Starting teeth cleaning during puppyhood can make future visits much easier for both the pet and the owner.

  • Are the products used during the cleaning safe for my pet?

Yes. We use all-natural products throughout the visit. If you have specific concerns about ingredients or your pet has known sensitivities, we are happy to answer questions before you book. Being transparent about what we use and how we work is something we take seriously.

Highly recommend Pearly Whites!

My 5-year-old dog had her first appointment, and McKenzie was absolutely wonderful with her. She was so patient, gentle, and made the whole experience stress-free. The results were incredible—I honestly couldn't believe the difference. I also love that everything is done naturally.

What really stood out was the no-pressure approach. There was no push to book another appointment and absolutely no guilt trip about not brushing my dog's teeth every day. Just honest advice, amazing care, and fantastic results.

First time user of Pearly Whites and I would highly recommend their service. They looked after Alto very well and performed as advertised. Elisha was very friendly, outgoing and did a fantastic job on Alto’s teeth. The before and after pictures were terrific.

Again, if you are looking for natural cleaning, look no further than Pearly Whites for a great job done at a very reasonable price.

Second trip to Pearly Whites and they did not disappoint. This time McKenzie cleaned and pampered Alto, no easy feat. Quick, efficient and more importantly, a happy dog. Highly recommend Pearly Whites.

AMAZING! We have a big dog who had acquired a ton of plaque. It’s entirely gone along with stains I didn’t even realize could be removed. So so impressed. Thank you.
